Covid-19/Tourism , Importance of tourism and impact of covid-19 on tourism

How Important is Tourism in India and The Effect of Covid-19 on it?

Importance:
  • India ranked 34 in the Travel and Tourism as per the report published by the World Economic Forum.
  • In 2018 Tourism in India contributed about approx 17 lakh crore in India's GDP and as of 2019 more than 3 crore jobs were created in the tourism sector in India, which was more than 7 % of total employment in the country.
  • It is estimated that hotels industry have annual revenue of  Rs 38,000 crore in India.
  • The resturant  industry in India has an annual turnover of approx Rs 4 lakh crore. This industry provides direct employment to more than 6.5 lakh people.
  • The air transport industry employs over 4 lakh people directly and more than 9 lakh people are employed in related supply chain in Inida.
Effects:
  • A lot of decreasing revenue, turnover and employment ( near about 38 lakh ) has resulted due to this pandemic.
  • With international and domestic travel on halt, demand for turbine fuel has declined.
  • The resturant industry in India is expecting almost zero revenue and a drop of 50% in the months to come.
  • At least 30% of hotel industry could be impacted if the situation does not improve by the end of July 2020.
  • Aviation industry in India could incur losses worth Rs 27000 crore in the first quarter of 2020-2021. The passengers growth of airlines is likely to fall to a negative growth for the 2020-2021.
Apart from that 350 employees from India's leading travel companies like Make My Trip
were laid off during this pandemic . Tourism industry in Inida is the worst - hit sector in this pandemic.
And with its collapse, not only one but many other sectors connected with it, also stare at a heavy loss as well as employment.

Should We Travel in 2020 ?
  • As of now, no clear guidelines have been provided on how to safely travel during this pandemic. And that means, you should refrain from travelling till you get a green signal. It is recommended to travel after assuring your safety. However let us hope good that tourism will resume in an organized and safe way . And if that happens, I must encourage you not to stop yourself and your followers on social media from travelling in 2020.
Why You Should Travel to Domestic Destinations in 2020?
  • As soon as the travelling is permitted most of the people's priority would be going not too far from home and people would choose road trips rather than airways and as long as it is safe . Travelling to domestic destination will generate revenue, GDP of country as this pandemic has hit the economic condition of entire country. So travelling locally would help business to revive and would improve the economic condition of country.
Conclusion:

To travel or not in the period of this pandemic is of course depends on your decision. My only motive is to give you a perspective of tourism and effect of Covid on tourism. I always encourage safe and responsible travelling. This blog, by no means wants to encourage you to start travelling right now or as soon as government gives tourism a green signal. Take your time, read and follow guidelines, take care of safety precautions whenever the govt issues them before planning any trip.
